How to accept payments in Turkey (without things getting complicated)

Is India your home market? Thinking of expanding into APAC from overseas? Selling here isn’t always simple.

Choose a Merchant of Record like Paddle, and you can offer your customers the payment methods they expect, get more payments approved, and stay on top of India's tax and compliance requirements.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

  • How to improve checkout conversion in India
  • Why your payment acceptance in India is lower than you’d expect
  • The tax and compliance requirements of selling in India
  • Ways to optimize revenue as you scale
  • How Paddle helps you grow.

Improve checkout conversion with Turkish payment methods

Cards are popular in Turkey, so accepting them at checkout is a good start. But it isn’t enough to win the sale.

Customers also expect a checkout experience that feels local, including prices in Turkish Lira (TRY). Why show prices in the currency they’re used to? Well, it can reduce friction, build trust, and make it more likely that they’ll complete the purchase.

Payment localization in numbers

The right price can make all the difference

Did you know that customers in Turkey often expect lower prices than those in Western markets? Companies typically see 25-50% higher growth rates when pricing reflects that.

Payments still failing? Here’s why

You’ve localized your checkout? That’s great! But you might still see more failed payments than you’d expect.

Full disclosure: It’s probably not because your customers don’t want to pay. More often, it’s down to something small:a card expiring, a temporary network issue, or because the payment service provider (PSP) doesn’t perform well in that market.
Did you know?

In 80-90% of cases, a payment failure occurs because of a soft decline, not because your customer doesn’t want to pay.

Most digital software businesses rely on just one PSP. But here’s the thing: No single PSP performs consistently everywhere. A payment Stripe declines in Turkey may well be approved by another provider.

Paddle uses multi-PSP routing to retry soft declines in the background. That means you get more of your payments approved, across every market.

Istanbul-based Codeway recovered nearly $500,000 in failed payments by using Paddle’s intelligent cancellation flows, and automated retry and recovery.

These recoveries have directly contributed to profitability without compromising on user experience.”

Selling internationally should open doors – not create a maze of new processes

Don’t forget: If you’re selling into Turkey, you need to navigate the local regulatory and payments infrastructure.

“Turkey has strict banking regulations. We had initially wanted to use Stripe, but it didn’t support Turkish companies, so we had to use a local payment provider instead.” Amirali Nurmagomedov, Co-Founder, kovan studio

There’s also ongoing requirements around tax, invoicing, refunds, disputes, and chargebacks. All of which can distract you from building and selling your product.

A Merchant of Record like Paddle takes the complexity off your plate. We handle payments, tax and compliance, so you can focus on growth.

Imagine going viral in a different country, but you can't monetize because you're using Stripe, that was the situation we found ourselves in. We had amazing international traffic, but we couldn't monetize because of how difficult compliance became.”

Nikolas Adjan, Co founder of Hesse.ai

Ready to sell beyond Turkey? Don’t let complexity slow you down

If you’re based in Turkey and starting to sell internationally, payments can get complicated pretty quickly.

You might need different PSPs, separate billing systems, and a way to keep up with the tax and compliance requirements of each new market you enter. The more markets you add, the harder it becomes to keep track of everything.

“While we were able to scale our customer support team, we didn’t have the necessary specialist knowledge that was required. It was a drain on our time and resources and was becoming a real headache.”

Kaan Ortabas, co-founder, HubX

A Merchant of Record like Paddle removes that friction, handling everything on your behalf.

Launch App2Web flows in the US, without building everything yourself

Want to sell into the US from Turkey? For years, selling through the App Store meant giving up 15-30% of every transaction to cover payments, tax, billing, and fraud.

That’s changing. Court rulings and new regulations now allow apps to direct US-based users to external checkouts. A web-based Merchant of Record model typically costs around 5–6% all in.That’s a fraction of the App Store's 15–30%.

App2Web in practice

When Turkey-based HubX used Paddle to monetize on the web, they transformed their business in a few days:

  • No more App Store fees
  • Increased payment acceptance
  • $106,000 recovered in 72 days.

FAQs

What is a Merchant of Record?

A Merchant of Record (MoR) is the legal entity responsible for selling a product to the end customer. It takes on payments, tax collection, compliance, refunds, and chargebacks on your behalf, rather than you managing each of those separately yourself.

Do I need a Turkish entity to accept payments? Not necessarily. Turkey's payments ecosystem is regulated under Law No. 6493, and only CBRT-licensed institutions can provide regulated payment services directly. A Merchant of Record can handle this on your behalf without you needing to establish and license a local entity yourself.

Does Stripe work in Turkey?

Yes, Stripe is fully available in Turkey. However, Stripe's payment acceptance rate in Turkey is often lower than expected since it is a single PSP.
